Montego Bay, Jamaica
July 2024
My brother, mother, sister-in-law and I took a trip to Jamaica. My brother and his wife usually go to Jamaica every year for Reggae Sumfest. Jamaica has always been on my bucket list, so this year my mom and I decided to tag along. We spent the night in New Orleans the night before our departure because of a 5:25 am flight time. We stayed in the Fairfield inn in Metairie, LA and the rooms were great. Very comfortable bed, the location was perfect. It was about two blocks from the mall and a lot of food choices. When the alarm went off 2:15 am, I really second thought about going on this trip. It was too darn early for this. Hopped out of bed and begin my morning routine to get ready for the Uber driver, who was scheduled to pick us up at 3:10 am. We got to the airport before all of the workers. Remember I said the flight was at 5:25 am and we got to the airport at 3:30 am. We had no problem getting through TSA or flight any issues. Note: If you just received your passport, make sure to sign it prior to getting to the airport.
We arrived in Montego Bay, Jamaica and the heat was no different than being in Louisiana. It just has a slight less humidity and it came with a breeze. We were in line for at least two hours trying to get through immigration.
Note:
Please book Club Mobay for arrival and departure. It will save you some time getting through immigration.
Make sure everyone fills out the immigration from that is handed to you on the plane, or you can fill it out online.
If you booked a transfer, look for the hotel's name on the sign at the counter.
As soon as you get to your transfer transportation, they will ask if you smoke. You will hear this throughout your trip.
The transfer driver (Jason) was a great guide from the airport to our hotel. He told us so much rich history about Montego Bay. I didn't know Johnny Cash had a school and a home here. Also, if you want to get a glimpse of the Royal Family, they vacation at the Half Moon Hotel when they are on vacation. There are several Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants here and some may say it is better here,. (I didn't try it) Arrived at the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall Hotel and the place is elegant. From the mint green curtains, the peachy red walls, the red chandelier to the gold accents and the white grand staircase; the hotel is beautiful!
We checked in and was escorted to our rooms. We had the best view of the hotel. Our room was an Oceanfront on the corner of the property. We could see the pool, ocean and all of the beach parties right from out balcony. We had our own butler service. Stocked mini-bar with robes and slippers. We were granted access to all of the other properties. I would book this location again.
The grounds were breathtaking. There was two restaurants outside. One was the lunch buffet and the other was the hamburger, jerk chicken little hip spot on the beach. Four restaurants in the building; French Cuisine, Jamaican Cuisine, Japanese Cuisine, Steak House and a breakfast buffet to die for.
The drinks were made to perfection. Top shelf, mid shelf and basic was available. The bartenders were amazing and kept the drinks coming. Be very careful, that Jamaican rum will sneak up on you.
The swim up bar (where I spent most of my time) was the best place to be. From the live performances of the bartenders or learning how to dance like a Jamaican, this was the area. Everyday there was something happening at this location. People were getting up early to claim their lounge chairs to be next to the action.
On day three, we drove to Negril. Being that my brother has been to Jamaica many times and have driving there, he took on the task of getting us there. In Jamaica, they drive on the left side of the rode and they don't always stay on that side of the road. (lol) From Montego Bay to Negril was about an hour and a half drive. The drive was along the coast, so you saw all the blue water you wanted. I really appreciated this drive because you were able to see the real local culture as we drove by.
Negril, was a cozy little ocean town; very resort-ish. Beautiful blue and blue-green water with cliffs. We visited Rick's Cafe! The famous hangout spot in Negril. Exceptional vibes. People of all walks of life. People were cliff jumping off of the cliff. Such a beautiful scene. Also, the sunset is to die for. Too bad we missed it because of the overcast.
We had an amazing time in Jamaica. We are looking to book this trip again and bring others with us. If Montego Bay or Negril isn't on your bucket list, you have to add it. Until next time!
